Talent Readiness Program: Engaging Female Leaders

We know through external research sources that organizations with greater diversity at the decision-making tables make better decisions and therefore get better results. While we are certainly not alone, Best Buy has opportunities in this area. WOLF is committed to being part of the solution by developing a Talent Readiness Program. The Talent Readiness Program is designed to prepare female talent, at targeted levels of leadership at corporate and in the field, to take on new leadership roles, bringing greater diversity to those decision-making tables.

The WOLF Talent Readiness Program is unique in its approach to development. The program incorporates not only Skills (IQ skills related to business and leadership) and Experience, but a key third dimension – social and emotional intelligence, or S/EQ – an often overlooked essential element to great leadership.

Leadership in a Connected World

The program goes beyond the classroom by integrating technology to connect participants to the work, how they learn and share with other participants throughout the year. A connected world is a relationship-based world. With the help of technology, people are connecting constantly, not only with information, but also with each other. Indeed, getting things done with and through other people - collaboration, in all its forms - is the norm in a Connected World.

Participant Phases

Participants are enrolled for two years of development.  Year one, Phase I, consists of 4 Quarterly sessions focusing on the S/EQ and IQ content with workshops and guest speakers and spotlights by Best Buy leaders. Year two, Phase II, gives participants the platform to use the personal and social foundations skills they learned in Phase I. During this phase, participants engage with WOLF Packs in their areas as Development Liaisons providing support and sharing insight from their experiential learning through the TRP.

Outcomes

As of January 2012, approximately 300 female leaders have completed the program.  Participants have reported interviewing for new leadership roles in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. Nearly 60% of FY11 program participants believe they are ready to take on a new role and are aligned with their manager in this belief, while 18% admitted they are looking at roles outside their original plan for the next role they may wish to take, based on their participation in the program.
